Her name is C-178, identified by her defunct GPS collar. I call her "Mamma" and her boys I named the Brothers Grimm. I am sure you have seen them lounging in the shade after a meal of gophers just below the park entrance on Chesebro. Perhaps they have been spied trotting through your back yard or our neighborhood creeks. This particular brood has been well-integrated to live so close to humans.
They all suffer from mange, likely as a consequence of ingesting rodenticides by eating the easy pickings of poisoned small mammals. Mange is a nasty way to go; as the poisons break down the immune system, the disease spreads to cause blindness and the inabilty to hunt, ultimately leading to starvation. Rodenticides work their way up the food chain, also affecting bobcats, mountain lions and birds of prey.
You can help stop the demise of our wild neighbors. See this page to learn more about going Poison-free in Old Agoura and help keep our neighborhood wild.
P.S. The NPS wildlife biologists are aware of this group of coyotes, and these photos have been sent to them for ongoing monitoring.
