Co--existing with Wildlife

We live in an area with an abundance of wildlife. Old Agoura is dedicated to fostering a sustainable coexistence between human and wild residents. We aim to strike a balance that ensures the well-being of both our community and the surrounding wild landscapes. Through active participation and collaboration with various stakeholders, our goal is to foster a harmonious environment for all.

We've included helpful checklists, links, and brochures below. Please contact us if you have questions or need assistance.

In our neighborhood, you will see several wildlife signs. We assist The Santa Monica Mountains Fund (SAMO) with its "Break the Poison Chain" campaign. If you would like a sign, contact SAMO at contact@samofund.org

Rat poison kills more than rats.

Here is some education and outreach information for our community regarding the danger rat poisons pose to people, pets, and wildlife.

Using poisons puts your children and pets at risk.

Read the Scientific American article on rat poisons and how they endanger 10,000 children every year in the USA.

What to do if there's a snake in your boots...

Here is California Herp's guide to identifying local snake species, which serve an important part in the ecosystem by keeping the rodent population in check.  Snakes do not aggressively attack humans, but will protect themselves in self-defense. If you find a venomous species, your best option is to leave it alone. There is no reasonable need to kill any snake. If you want to have a dangerous snake removed from your property, contact someone in your area with experience in snake removal and relocation (some contacts provided here).
